Easily the most famous of Thailand's vacation destinations is Chiang Mai, next to the capital Bangkok the second largest and oldest city. Chiang Mai is removed from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, a charming place with a moat and remnants of fortified walls. It is the kind of place where a simple stroll from the hotel to a caf? turns into a memorable sightseeing experience.
Scattered across Chiang Mai are hundreds of temples and pagodas which are visible from most of the hotels. The most dignified temple sits atop Doi Suthep Mountain on the fringe of the city center, which can be viewed from all corners of Chiang Mai.
Shopping is also world-class in Chiang Mai, whether that means spending an afternoon in the mall near the Chiang Mai International Airport or strolling across the city's expansive evening markets. The handicraft items, delicate carvings, silk fashions and original artwork in Chiang Mai are first-rate.
Chiang Mai is also a great place to learn about Thai culture. Tourists can enroll in cooking, language, yoga or massage classes at little cost. Guided meditation retreats to mountain monasteries are also popular, as are visits to elephant camps, including the conservation project Elephant Nature Park.
